A big alpine bikes banner and another for Buff. Church hall clearly the finish point though desks were empty. So not able to conform where the race started?

Ah, I think this might have been the mountain bike orienteering event that BoF did. Someone else from the triathlon club posted on their Facebook group about it and BoF expressed an interest. It sounds like they had fun and they come in first male pair (out of not very many) and won -

a doughnut. Well, a doughnut each. BoF brought his home to share with me. True love indeed.Edited to add

The front page for Scottish Mountain Bike Orienteering says "Get out on your bike, explore new areas and eat cake". Sounds like a splendid organisation... :-)Posted 8 years ago # -
"Sounds like a splendid organisation"
Sounds like a CCE sort of thing - for those who think Audaxing is a bit strenuous...

Well you've all missed the local one - but there's and October event at Mugdock, and one in Falkirk (half in the dark) in November. These are excellent events - they turn mountain bike racing into something which is a good deal more than fittest-and-strongest-and-bravest-wins.
They are good family events too. I competed on Saturday with one of the kids (now well into teenage years, but first race entered many years ago). At the East Lothian event the youngest competitor I saw was barely able to ride straight... AND still got a respectable score. But these are tough events too if you want a really good score - some excellent strong mountain bikers involved.
Saturday had us all the way over from Balerno to Carlops and back in the 4 hours - with a fairly high proportion of walking, but chance to see an area of the Pentlands which was unknown to me. Wrong decision in terms of points as it turned out (staying more local for more low score checkpoints actually a better choice for our level of fitness) - but hey that's the game.
You need: ability to map read, ability to recover quickly from inevitable navigation mistakes, teamwork (if not solo), ability to plan how far you can get in the available time... and interestingly those who do well are quite often older.
And the cake was excellent! Happy to answer any questions from anyone whose interested.

BoF and his team mate commented that because they both MTB in the Pentlands regularly the navigation wasn't particularly tricky... he'd be interested to see how he/they got on in an area they didn't know.
Incidentally he commented that they should have gone for the really distant 40-pointer rather than coming back and ending up having time to pick up some of the local controls that weren't worth so much. Just to illustrate different calls different teams might make.

I thought BOF was up to FOF?

Indeed he is, but I have decided to stick to BoF on here, because reasons.

That was before he only gave her half his doughnut.
